Our commitment to academic excellence extends seamlessly from Key Stage 1 (KS1) to Key Stage 2 (KS2). In this transformative journey, we ensure a progressive and enriching curriculum that builds upon the foundational skills established in the earlier years.

Phonics: Phonics instruction plays a pivotal role in Key Stage 1 (KS1) as it forms the bedrock of early literacy skills. During this stage, students learn to decode and recognise the sounds of letters, laying the groundwork for reading and spelling. Mastering phonics in KS1 equips students with essential tools for reading fluency, comprehension, and language acquisition. As they progress to Key Stage 2 (KS2), the solid foundation in phonics becomes a springboard for more advanced literacy skills. The ability to decode unfamiliar words and grasp sound-symbol relationships established in KS1 empowers students to approach more complex texts in KS2 with confidence, enhancing their overall literacy competency and setting the stage for academic success.

Writing: As students transition from KS1 to KS2, our curriculum evolves to deepen their writing skills. Emphasis is placed on more complex sentence structures, creative expression, and the development of a distinctive writing voice. Through a scaffolded approach, students refine their ability to articulate ideas, ensuring a seamless progression in their writing proficiency.

Grammar: The grammar curriculum continues to advance, with a focus on more intricate language structures and grammatical concepts. As students move into KS2, they delve deeper into grammar rules, enabling them to apply their understanding in more sophisticated ways. Our goal is to foster a mastery of grammar that enhances both written and verbal communication.

Reading: The transition to KS2 marks a further exploration of literary genres and themes. Students engage with a diverse range of texts, developing advanced comprehension skills and a critical appreciation for literature. Reading activities become more nuanced, encouraging students to analyse, interpret, and draw connections between texts, fostering a deeper understanding of the written word. Guided reading and Library sessions are an integral part of our learning journey, throughout our Key Stages.

The transition from KS1 to KS2 at the American Academy Ghana is designed to be a seamless progression, with each stage building upon the skills acquired in the preceding years.

At the American Academy Ghana, our dedicated teachers employ a variety of effective strategies to ensure that our students feel fully included and supported in every lesson.
